Thomas Barth - 38 Years of Crane Operation, Inspection and Training

Tom Barth is a 38 year veteran with expert experience operating and inspecting thousands of cranes. He has built a solid reputation with crane owners, operators and manufacturers for his expertise as an operator, trainer and inspector. He has been called as an expert witness and crane accident investigator in more than 55 cases.

As Tom remarks on many occasions, "I live, eat and breathe cranes," and it shows in his committment to crane safety.

Tom started as an "oiler" and for the next 6 years went from one crane to the next, gaining experience with each job. He was invited to Manitowoc factory to attend their training, after working with a company representative repairing a crane in the field. Next, Tom took on jobs as a crane operator in Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska, working on a jack up platform and dealing with 30 ft tides. Later, he worked on the Alaska pipeline operating cranes and making many 4- and 2-crane picks and operated a crane for Red Adair, extinguishing an oil well blowout.

Tom initiated the training program and instructed the advanced and intermediate crane classes for the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302 in Palmer, Alaska. He then started crane inspections for an accredited agency by USDL/OSHA and was then accredited by the USDL/OSHA under 29CFR, Part 1919, giving him the authority to sign the OSHA form 71 and 72. Less the 100 people are authorized in the United States.

Tom is now fully involved in training, consulting and inspections through Barth Crane Inspections, LLC.
